Brusho reminder and last weeks late post, sorry !

I can't believe it's Sunday night and I've not posted last weeks paintings.

Tomorrow is the brusho demo so read last weeks post for a full reminder of what to bring.

Brushing demo 13th June

Hopefully you all know that there is going to be a brush of demo on the 13th June.

Please find below a list of what to bring. 

Brusho-What to bring

Paper BOCKINGFORD 140lb Not is recommended. Some of the more expensive watercolour papers don’t work as well with some of the techniques, especially bleach. Large sheets are good!  Bring plenty.
Watercolour Brushes for using with Brusho and some old brushes for bleach

Pencils rubber etc.
2 Water sprays one for pure water, one for bleach+water

Pots for water ( bring several!)
Palette
Cloths and old towels
Drawing board
Masking tape
Bleach --the household stuff
A separate container for bleach that you will apply with a brush
You might also need white wax crayon or candle. Permanent black markers ( thick and thin). Newspaper to cover tables; it can be messy.

Please come suitably dressed. Brusho might wash out but bleach would be a disaster!

Also you might want to bring along some pictures to work from. Any subject! Animals, seascapes, landscapes, figures, flowers. Here are a few Brusho pics to show you what you might choose.

  

  

 

BBC artist programme wants applications

I wanted to get in touch as I have an opportunity that may be of interest to people involved with Monk Fryston Art Club. We are producing a new series for BBC One which will see amateur artists being mentored by some of the leading names in visual art.  School of Art is a primetime series scheduled for later this year and we are looking for anyone with a huge talent and enormous potential to apply. The programme is open to anyone who is over 16 and a resident in the UK.

News but no photos

Monk Fryston Art Club Summer Picnic

This year's Summer Picnic will be held on Monday 8 August at Sue Woodhall's garden in 6 Priory Park Grove (off Common Lane) Monk Fryston. You will be able to park wherever you usually do for a Monday meeting, and walk to the Picnic. 

Food will be provided by Robert the caterer, in picnic boxes to be prepaid (cost to be advised). Members, friends and partners can all come, as long as picnic boxes are booked and paid for. 

We hope for good weather, but there will be a marquee erected on site in any case. 

The event will commence in late morning for coffee, and go on throughout the afternoon. By all means bring equipment along if you want to paint or draw, but for most of us it will be a social occasion!

Put this in your diary now; more details will be published closer to the event, and a notice will be put up on the Church Hall notice board for you to indicate if you hope to attend, and if you may be bringing a guest. If you are unsure that you will be able to attend, but hope to do so, please put your name down anyway - at this stage we won't hold you to it, but it will help us to get an idea of total numbers, for the catering.

Rooms for All Summer Exhibition

The proposal for an exhibition by club members in the premises of the 'Rooms for All' store in  Selby was put on the back burner, due to time pressure when the (highly successful) Club exhibition had to be put on at short notice at the Manor House during the Tour de Yorkshire.

It is hoped to re-book the exhibition space for July-August (around four or five weeks). Approximately 80 to 100 pictures can be displayed, at a hanging cost of around £1.00 each. 

We will have flyers and posters printed for distribution around the district, and hope to create some local interest. it will also be an opportunity to promote our Autumn Exhibition, which will be held at Monk Fryston Hall on Sunday 18 September.

Rachel McNaughton on 13 June - 'Brusho'

A reminder that Rachel has been booked to come to the Club on 13 June. This will be to demonstrate 'Brusho', which we are told can be messy stuff to handle. We hope that Rachel will get us all involved in a workshop, rather than just give a demonstration, in response to reaction from members who (whisper it) have found recent demos just a tiny bit uninvolving...

John Harrison Workshop

We had a new demonstrator to the club this last week.

John Harrison who is a very successful artist and has a great website.

The "about me" section on his website is this ...

Doodles. Scribbles. Sketches. Napkins……yes, I use all of these, and more, to get and develop ideas (and sometimes the finished work).

Hello – my name’s John – John Harrison – Yorkshire born and bred, and proud of it. My home county, especially the wonderful town and villages along its East coast, is the inspiration for much of my recent work, seen and drawn with a different view of familiar places.

Rupert the Bear, the Eagle, Dandy & Beano, Superman, Batman…

These, and many more, were early influences…in fact, the very first time I read a Rupert Bear story, I just knew I wanted to draw (and be in)those wonderful scenes of an idyllic world. 

The pen and ink style of all this childhood reading influenced me to a greater extent than I realised – after trying out most other media,I have come full circle and for the last few years have worked almost exclusively in a line and wash style. It feels the most natural thing in the world to me, and I hope that feeling comes through in my work.

I’ve been involved in creative endeavours of one form or another
for most of my adult life: I had a long period where I earned my living as a professional drummer, and sketched and drew constantly: sadly, I no longer have those sketchbooks, which I’m sure, contained many illustrations I’d be proud to show.

A graphic designer with a real passion for typography, I love using ink and watercolour wash, with buildings, townscapes and coastal scenes my favourite subject matter.

 So he gave a demonstration of his style and apart from a technical issue it went very very well.
